Wussy
“The best band in America,” according to influential rock critic Robert Christgau who counts several of Cincinnati-based Wussy’s albums among the tops of the last decade. Add a four-star review in Rolling Stone for their fourth full length album, Strawberry, released late last year, and you’ve got a band that’s grown from underground fan favorite to critics’ darling. The four piece group, fronted by former Ass Pony’s major domo Chuck Cleaver, and lithe guitarist/songwriter Lisa Walker, are known for their jangly, droning take on rootsy Velvets-inspired indie rock. Walker and Cleaver’s songs are buoyed on by multi-instrumentalists Mark Messerly and Joe Klug. Now fresh off a few career best set at this year’s South By Southwest, including a live concert on seminal Seattle station KEXP, the Summer Celebration will be one of Wussy’s last local shows before heading out to tour the West coast this summer. http://www.wussy.org/

Shiny & the Spoon
Called “the best folk duo our region has to offer,” Shiny and the Spoon portray the intimacy of Johnny Cash and June Carter, with head-turning vocals and a vibrant acoustic core, complimented by sprinklings of ukulele, guitar, harmonica, and good old-fashioned boot-stompin’. Their debut and home-recorded EP earned nods from Cincinnati publications such as CityBeat and the Cincinnati Entertainment Awards, as well as the renowned UK webzine “Americana UK” who called it “an accomplished debut that does exactly what an EP should, makes you want more of the same.” A recent Independent Music Award nominee for Americana Song of the Year, the real-life couple is now augmented by upright bassist, Pete Brown, and Matt Frazer on drums. http://www.shinyandthespoon.com/

Josh Eagle and the Harvest City
Combine soulful songwriting with soaring melodies reminiscent of that SoCal sound that populated 70’s airwaves and your dad’s turntable, Josh Eagle and the HC’s updated take on folk rock have made them a popular local and touring act. With two solid albums under their belt, a recent inclusion in the “top ten folk artists you should know,” and opening slots for venerable artists like Robert Earl Keen, Eagle is poised for bigger things on the horizon. http://josheaglemusic.com/home.cfm

The Cincy Brass
Hailing from Cincinnati, The Cincy Brass continues to throw audiences into a Mardi Gras-like atmosphere with the sound of their brass. Whether it be a traditional New Orleans parade song like “When the Saints Go Marching In”, high energy covers of Kanye West, Black Eyed Peas, James Brown, Deerhoof, and Lady GaGa, or a heart thumpin’ original, The Cincy Brass will make you think you are dancing on Bourbon Street. Their 2011 release “Ain’t Nuttin Louder,” showcases their ability to mix things up, including guest appearances from rock and roll hall of famer, Bootsy Collins, and Cincinnati Pops’ conductor, John Morris Russell. The Cincy Brass took home the “Best R&B/Funk/Soul” trophy at the Cincinnati Entertainment Awards in 2011. http://thecincybrassmusic.com/

Also appearing: The Blue Wisp’s Young Lions Jazz Ensemble and the YPCC (Young Professionals Choral Collective)

SH-BOOM! Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati (ETC) concludes its 2011-2012 main stage season with the regional premiere of Life Could Be a Dream, May 2-20, 2012. Directed by D. Lynn Meyers; Musical Director is Scot Woolley; and Choreographer is Patti James.

From the Roger Bean, creator of sell-out hit The Marvelous Wonderettes, comes the Crooning Crabcakes, the boy group banned from the Springfield High School prom that made it possible for The Marvelous Wonderettes to perform. In an era before “American Idol” and “Star Search,” the guys get one more chance at fame and fortune as Denny, Eugene, Skip and Wally form a singing group to enter and win the local radio contest and realize their dreams of making it to the big time! Featuring such classic songs as “Stay” (Just a Little Bit Longer),” “Runaround Sue,” “Tears On My Pillow,” “Unchained Melody,” “Earth Angel,” and of course the title song, Life Could Be A Dream is another musical trip down memory lane that will leave you laughing, singing and cheering!

“ETC is delighted that three of our actors will receive their Equity cards through this production. Additionally, Will Selnick, a former intern also received his Equity membership through Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati,” explains Producing Artistic Director D. Lynn Meyers. “Nurturing young talent and giving them a start on their professional path is a large part of our mission and it’s so wonderful we get to end the season on a high note with such a fun production,” she concludes.

“Cincinnati is looking pretty good these days. Ten years ago its downtown core was a pretty bleak place to spend a day off. It has a bit of a sparkle these days[...] the audience was incredible and made what could have been a terrible show into a very fun night. We did another radio session today at WNKU and [...] Karin Berquist our friend and collaborator from Over The Rhine stopped by to say hello….”

I am encouraged that one day I may get to see the Cowboy Junkies at a venue like the Emery Theatre in the neighborhood which inspired their friends and collaborators – Over The Rhine.

Lots and Lots happening in OTR tonight for FINAL FRIDAY.

Here is some of what is happening (in no particular order):

From Sloane Boutique -

Hello Sloane Rangers!
It is Final Friday in Over-the-Rhine! To celebrate we are having 20% OFF all clothing through the weekend!!
Be sure to stop in for some wine and shopping!

From Couture Couture -

Couture Couture Boutique would like to invite you to help us celebrate our 1st year in business with a 20% off discount, complimentary wine, music and free gifts from Jergens, Biore and John Freida !! We will also have an art exhibit featuring the artwork of Michael Coppage which will be a great addition to Final Friday!!
Party starts at 8pm!!

From Each Note Secure:

Remember how fun it is to skate? Well, to be honest, if we’re talking old-school skating (circa sixth grade or so) I remember a lot of falling down and looking like a dork in front of a girl I liked. Skating is a more fun now however, with adolescence out of the way. And it’s even more fun when you mash it up with live music, video games, and free prizes.

That’s the approach the Cincinnati Recreation Commission took with Friday’s 18-and-over event, taking place at the Over the Rhine Recreation Center. The event will feature performances by You, You’re Awesome and Automagik, and you can skate around the bands while they play! It doesn’t get much cooler than that. The Cincinnati Roller Girls will be there as well, and there’ll be Wii, fooseball, pool, and air hockey on hand for some additional non-skating fun.

Admission is $5, which includes the cost of skate rental (although you can bring your own if you’re so inclined). The money goes to benefit the Over the Rhine Recreation Center, which works to offer after-school and seasonal programs to youth in the community, with services ranging from homework help to field trips and enrichment activities. Plus, there will be raffles all night for gift cards from local Cincinnati businesses like Pho Lang Thang and Park + Vine. Grand prizes include VIP passes to Cincy Blues Fest and three-day passes to Bunbury Fest.

This will be OTR Skate’s second outing, after their success last year. Make it a point to go Friday night, and let’s all make this an annual thing. Because roller skating plus live music, minus being a pre-teen, equals an awesome time.

OTR SKATE

Friday, April 27th, 8-11pm

OTR Recreation Center

From Streetpops -

Killer lineup for final Friday including newbies: Ginger mint mojito, authentic Vietnamese coffee, beet blood orange, chocomint, and root beer float! Try one, or three! Plus Pizza Bomba Food Truck! Hollar!!

Buffalo Killers at Segway

Lions Rampant @ MOTR

The Requiem Project: The Emery’s First Final Friday
(and it is all FREE)

Do you like old buildings? Then you will love this tour, there’s nothing like it in the States. In addition to the Underground locations, you will get a chance to see inside three additional buildings. See the challenges of historic preservation, and get access to places long hidden away. Get your tickets here.

New Tours Are Coming

Rookwood Pottery Tour

Those unfamiliar with Rookwood will become fans, and those that are fans will become Superfans when they see how the pottery is made. Tours will start in June. Beer Steins, fireplaces, Christmas ornaments and more are just some of the items which you will see being hand-crafted. See the process flows from idea development to final glazing. How is Wild Bill Hickok, Japanese artisans, and the President Roosevelt associated with Rookwood’s founder Maria Longworth? Find out in June. Tickets will be available in mid May.

Tours From Fountain Square

After three yearsof developing tours in Newport and Over-The-Rhine, American Legacy has decided to bring their show to Fountain Square. This winter they have been hard at work, digging into history and finding great sites that add to the story of Cincinnati. The tour details will officially be released in late May.

CT Law, the law office of Crehan & Thumann, LLC, has recently opened its doors for business at 1206 Race Street in Over-the-Rhine. CT Law was formed by Ken Crehan and Rob Thumann and is the first law office to open in the Gateway Quarter. They also look forward to being the area’s first true neighborhood law firm.

Ken and Rob both attended night school at Salmon P. Chase College of Law, while maintaining full-time jobs and family responsibilities. Just out of law school, both started their careers working on 4th Street in a large Cincinnati firm. It has alway been their goal to bring their big firm experience to a neighborhood firm setting. CT Law opened its doors on January 1, 2012 and is excited about being a part of the growth and development of Over-the-Rhine.

Ken and Rob feel their work and life experiences will enhance the neighborhood and they look forward to being a part of the community. They have an open door policy and encourage all to simply stop by the office for a free consultation or to just enjoy a cup of coffee. Please also visit their website at www.ctlawcincinnati.com for more information.
